Evan Phinney, a 17 year old grade 12 Honours student at Sacred Heart School of Halifax, began riding at age 7 at the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers. A time share on “Wonderland” owned by the Lancers, allowed Evan to continue in hunter competitions and then they moved into the show jumping ring. Together they have enjoyed success in the Meter 1.0 here in Nova Scotia, but also this year in WEF with a 6th place in Children's Jumper, and at Bromont International including a win in the Power and Speed. Evan immediately set her goal to qualify for the inaugural Canadian National Championships and with her parents support and with the help of her coach Jill Barker, Evan was fortunate to meet her current 1.10m mount “Duke of Earl”, a veteran competitor in the jumper ring. Evan and Earl have only been together since late June and Evan is thrilled with the knowledge and experience she is obtaining in this new partnership. Evan is a lead rider for the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancer Musical Ride, and divides her time between the Lancers in Halifax and at Horses At Work in Sweets Corner,N.S. training with Jill Barker, who also divides her coaching time between the two stables. Evan, who also is a competitive swimmer and volleyball player, and is the co-editor of her high school year book, hopes to continue with her riding when university beckons next year.
